DIY Dessert Tray and Play Food

I am sorry I have been MIA for so long, but I do have a really good reason :)  We have been loving on our sweetest new addition to our family!!!  I can't take credit for the awesome picture, but I can take credit for marrying him!!  Photo credit goes to my husband, Jeremy.

Now onto the little dessert tray I made for the girls.  I started this little project before our sweet little Emma's arrival, but never managed to get pictures once it was all complete.  Then once I managed to snap a few pictures, some pictures were inadvertently deleted/lost as well as one child was having a four year old moment and didn't want her picture taken.

Four year old moments aside, my sweet little girls love having daily tea parties and love to bring EVERY food item from their play kitchen to their tea party.  Although it was cute to have our daily tea parties, the clean up process was not so pretty.  Well, this momma starting thinking what if I get them some dessert play food that they can have at their tea parties AND it is their special desserts for their tea parties so they don't have to haul all the other food around.  I started looking online and in stores for some little desserts as well as looking for a tray to display their little treats, but I wasn't a fan of some of the prices I was seeing.  One day I happened to come across the wood craft section at JoAnn's and found these little wooden ball knobs.  I thought they would make the perfect little truffle dessert for the girls.  I also found smaller ones and grabbed those as well (don't forget your 40% off coupon).

Now that we had truffles for the dessert tray it was time to add some cakes.  Using some of the spare wood in the garage, I had Jeremy cut pieces for six cakes.  I did a light sanding on each piece before painting.  One other thing that I found by total accident were miniature wooden flower pots on one of our trips to Lowes.  Jeremy actually found them and was like, "look little ice cream cones."  I thought total genius, I can glue the little wooden balls from JoAnn's to the miniature flower pots and have ice cream treats for the dessert tray.

I used acrylic paint that we already had in our stash and picked their favorite colors.  Since I am no expert in mixing paints, some of the browns came out darker than others...we can call those milk chocolate and dark chocolate :) And of course, the truffles and cakes probably don't look realistic, but I sure had fun making them for the girls.  Here is where I would insert the pictures of the painting process, but those would be the pictures that have mysteriously disappeared.  In addition to those MIA pictures, the pictures for the items I used to make the dessert tray are also MIA.

Basically, for the dessert tray I purchased one large and one small white plastic plate from Target.  While I was there I also picked up little bowls to use for the base.  I glued the pieces together and set a few books on the top while the glue dried.

Once it was all dry and sturdy, I brought it into the girls room and placed it on their little table.  Of course they had to get out all of their tea cups and have their party, but as soon as the camera came out my sweet camera loving four year old decided to be shy!

Happy almost weekend!!!!
