Last Friday, I left you with the transformation the Expedit shelves have taken in our playroom and the next step we were planning for the bench.
I am so excited I have to show you the bench seat in all its glory....don't worry I will go through the step-by-steps of this beauty!!
To assemble the bench there were a couple of options...one being to sew and since sewing is not my speciality I decided to go the route of stapling the fabric to a MDF board. From start to finish, the bench took me less than 30 minutes to complete. The longest part was lining up the foam/MDF board to the right spot on the fabric. So step one, lay out the fabric print side down.
Step two and three, lay down the foam and then the MDF board.
For the next step, I decided to trim the remaining fabric and then fold it over and staple again - I didn't want this fabric to move!! As you can see, it isn't the prettiest, but the fabric is definitely secure with both sets of staples.
For the ends, I treated it like I was wrapping a present :) Again, not the prettiest, but it gets the job done.
To prevent the bench from sliding, my husband secured it to the Expedit shelf with 2 1/2 screws. Now our wiggly little girls have another spot to sit in the playroom and I put a big fat check mark next to this project as complete!!
Can I just say I was jumping up for joy when this baby was completed and couldn't wait to see the look on my girls' faces when they woke up the next morning. And because I am so in love with this little area in our playroom I have to show you more pictures :)
I went on a little shopping trip to Target this weekend - well actually it was just to pick up a prescription, but since I was there I had to stop by the dollar section! And boy am I glad I did, I found the silver tins that already had the chalkboard labels on them. And what makes them even better...when I got up to the cashier I found out they were on sale for $0.50!!
And of course, the right side of the bench can't be left out!!
And just for good measure, here is the full picture again!!!
Stay tuned for another exciting project in the playroom we completed this weekend!! If you follow me on Instagram you got a sneak peek!! :)
With much love,
Kristin

Thank you so much!!!
DeleteWhere did you get your cute green bins for the Expedit? I can never find any that fit!
ReplyDeleteI got them at Target, but unfortunately they don't have them anymore. They do have similar ones, just not the green ones. Ikea also has some in a few colors: http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/70244900/
DeleteLove this! It came out awesome! What kind of foam is this, and where did you get yours from?
ReplyDeleteThank you so much!! It is 3 inch camping foam that I purchased from a place called The Foam Store - they are great and cut it down to the exact size I needed.
DeleteSo cute! where did you attach the screws? I don't see any puckered fabric :).
ReplyDeleteThank you Cyndee!! We attached the screws through the Expedit bookcase and we totally held our breath hoping not to snag the fabric. We put the screws more in the center since there wasn't much fabric on the underside of the MDF board.

ReplyDeleteWhere did you get your super cute fabric? What kind of fabric is it? Easy to clean?
ReplyDeleteHi Kathryn! I purchased the fabric from Calico Corners (P Kaufmann Indoor/Outdoor Fahri Aquamarine), but I have also seen it online at Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Kaufmann-Indoor-Outdoor-Aquamarine-Fabric/dp/B004PKNLWU/ref=sr_1_fkmr0_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1383799337&sr=8-3-fkmr0&keywords=fahari+od+aquamarine
DeleteLuckily I have only had one spill on it, but I got it quickly enough with water and a washcloth and it came up with no issues.
Oh wow! I love it! I have loved this style of bench seating and you've really done a great job. I think something like this might even fit in my girls' playroom! Pinning to show hubby! Thanks for the inspiration!
ReplyDeleteThank you Bekka Joy!!! I absolutely love these shelves and how versatile they are!!!
Deletewhere did you purchase your bookcases from? and what are the exact dimensions of it?
ReplyDeleteI purchased the bookcases from Ikea (http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/20116274/#/70116276). The exact dimensions are: Width: 17 3/8 ", Depth: 15 3/8 ", Height: 72 7/8 "
DeleteWhere did you get the cute bins?
ReplyDeleteHi Jennifer!! I purchased the bins from Target when they were on clearance and unfortunately they don't have them anymore. I have seen similar bins there, just not the exact color :( They do have these plastic weave bins that I have been eyeing too http://www.target.com/p/room-essentials-y-weave-large-storage-basket-set-of-4/-/A-14279146#prodSlot=dlp_medium_2_3&term=baskets+bins.
DeleteWhere did you get the storage bins?
ReplyDeleteThis is so cute!! How thick was the foam you used? I see the 1" stuff is way cheaper than the 5", so I'm hoping I can get away with 1-2". Thanks!!
ReplyDeleteI used three inch foam, from a local foam store. I was originally going to purchase two inch, but the three was only a few dollars more so I went with that instead. I think the two inch foam would definitely work!!!
DeleteAnd thank you very much!!!
DeleteCould you tell me the dimensions of the foam and fabric you used?
ReplyDeleteThe foam is 3 inches thick and about 15 3/8 " wide and 72 7/8 " long. I purchased the fabric from Calico Corners (P Kaufmann Indoor/Outdoor Fahri Aquamarine), but I have also seen it online at Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Kaufmann-Indoor-Outdoor-Aquamarine-Fabric/dp/B004PKNLWU/ref=sr_1_fkmr0_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1383799337&sr=8-3-fkmr0&keywords=fahari+od+aquamarine.
DeleteI hope this helps!!
How many yards of fabric did you use if you remember? Want to make sure I order right online? I'm new to this. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteI purchased 2.5 yards of fabric to account for wrapping it around the foam, but that was more than enough! :)
DeleteHi:
ReplyDeletelove your play room. Have the same window and want to use those Ikea pieces. Problem is, I can't seem to find the same ones. Any ideas. TIA!!!
Thank you so much!! Unfortunately, Ikea discontinued the Expedit series, but they do have the Kallax series which is very similar in design and cost. :)
DeleteHere is a link to the Kallax shelving unit: http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/90275844/#/00275848
DeleteLooks amazing, I love those tropical colours!
ReplyDeleteThank you!!!
DeleteHow did you ensure the vertical shelves were secure and not going to fall? Love the look but thinking safety 😃
ReplyDeleteAlways safety first...especially with little ones! The vertical shelves are attached to the wall using an L-bracket, actually two for each shelf at the top.
DeleteAny ideas how to do this when the only vent in the room would be directly under the bookshelf on the floor?
ReplyDeleteNot too certain, could you send me a picture?? Also, the new system from Ikea is the Kallax system and they are a little smaller so they might work for you.
